Social media has become a major tool in determine a movie’s popularity, whether it’s newly-released or on the way. In the latter’s case, often times a new trailer will get folks jazzed for that movie’s impending arrival. That’s what happened last week with Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, as it debuted its third full-length trailer. There was plenty for fans to talk about regarding this new preview, and it looks like that talk paid off, as Fantastic Beasts overwhelmed Spider-Man: Homecoming and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story on social media.
Variety is reporting (via ComScore) that Fantastic Beasts dominated social media last week. The trailer’s release on September 28 led to over 62,000 new conversations, bringing the movie’s total to more than 592,000 cumulative conversations. In comparison, Spider-Man: Homecoming wracked up over 32,000 new conversations thanks to new set photos from that movie’s New York shoot, while Rogue One gained nearly 30,000 new conversations due to the latest Going Rogue webisode being released and the news regarding Lyra Erso. Trailing in fourth and fifth place for social media dominancy were Fifty Shades Darker and Doctor Strange, respectively.
Fantastic Beasts has a lot riding on its shoulders. With the main Harry Potter movie series having concluded five years ago, this spinoff is kicking off a new batch of Wizarding World adventures on the big screen, led by a brand-new cast in another time period. Fortunately, the movie has managed to keep a decent promotional presence over the last year, and as the statistics show, the latest trailer produced quite a buzz across social media. The more Fantastic Beasts can grab people’s attention over the next month from TV spots and other marketing moves, the more butts will be planted in seats to watch the prequel in theaters.
Taking place over 60 years before the main events in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them will follow Newt Scamander, an eccentric and introverted employee of the Ministry of Magic who comes to New York City to meet with an official from the Magical Congress of the United States of America. Unfortunately for him, what was supposed to be a simple business trip becomes complicated when Newt’s briefcase full of magical creatures is opened, letting the “beasts” loose across the Big Apple. With the help of his new friends, Newt will attempt to recapture all the creatures back to his briefcase, but he and the others will run into challenges from both the American wizarding authorities (specifically Auror Percival Graves) and the New Salem Philanthropic Society, a group of No-Majs determined to kill all witches and wizards (led by Mary Lou Barebone).
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them will cast its spell in theaters on November 18.
