It doesn’t matter where your allegiance as a fanboy or fangirl lies; you have to admit that Captain America: Civil War has thus far won the superhero movie genre in 2016. Garnering over $1 billion at the worldwide box office, and earning an avalanche of stellar reviews, the battle between Earth’s mightiest heroes seems to have hit all of the right emotional notes for audiences. However, it now seems that the titular Civil War isn’t quite finished. Joe Russo explained:

We always thought of this movie as the start of the war. It’s not over yet.

While answering questions on Quora, Joe Russo came out and explained that the events of Captain America: Civil War will continue to reverberate through the greater Marvel Cinematic Universe as new Phase 3 films hit theaters. Although that particular film’s story was neatly tied up when Steve Rogers saved Team Cap from the Raft prison, nobody really won, and the Sokovia Accords still definitely exist. Now the Civil War continues to rage. This means that events set in motion by the latest Marvel movie will impact everything we see in the near future — possibly even the battle with Thanos during the events of Avengers: Infinity War.

Although this is terrible news for our heroes, it’s great news for the fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. With pro and anti registration still characterizing the differences between the primary Avengers, this means that we could very well see more battles between heroes in future movies. With that in mind, it seems increasingly likely that Steve Rogers and Tony Stark could remain at odds until they’re forced to unite against the threat posed by Thanos and the Infinity Gauntlet.

Spiderman Civil War

One of the more interesting questions that this raises is how Spider-Man will be affected. He’s still Tony Stark’s apprentice, but we’ve generally assumed that he would operate with a secret identity during the events of Spider-Man: Homecoming. Is it possible that his status as a temporary member of Team Iron Man could lead him to unmask? He did it during Mark Millar’s iconic Civil War storyline, so nothing’s off the table; we’ll just have to wait and see.

Of course, it’s worth noting that several upcoming movies in the MCU likely will have the luxury of ignoring the Civil War altogether. Doctor Strange will take its titular character to a plane where such political matters are hardly relevant, and Thor: Ragnarok will reportedly spend far less time on Earth than previous Asgardian adventures. Regardless of this fact, it sounds like the heroes that participated in the opening salvo of Civil War aren’t quite done dealing with the red tape.

CinemaBlend will bring you any and all relevant details related to the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe as more information becomes available to us. The MCU will take the action into the Astral Plane when Doctor Strange hits theaters on November 4. Stay tuned for more details!
