Suicide Squad Has Finally Been Dethroned At The Box Office, Get The Details
While Suicide Squad might not have been oozing the quality that some people were expecting, the blockbuster has still held a pretty successful run at the box office. It’s been the number one film for the last three weekends and was on the verge of being the first movie of the year to secure a fourth in a row. However, the figures for this weekend have come in and it looks like Suicide Squad was finally dethroned; all it took was a couple of teenagers hiding from an evil blind guy.
The Hollywood Reporter has the numbers, and they report that new horror film Don’t Breathe is projected to make $22 million by the end of the weekend after earning $10 million Friday night. Suicide Squad, the highest grossing opening for an August release, is expected to finish Sunday with an estimated $12 million. That will push the supervillain-centric film up to a domestic total of $282 million; while Suicide Squad wasn’t able to take home that last record, it’s hard to say that the film didn’t put up a fight.
Meanwhile, Don’t Breathe is pushing back against the rough terrain of late August. Made on a budget of $10 million, it will become the latest horror film of the summer to exceed expectations. It looks like everybody loves a good scare, considering that other genres have suffered these last few months. This weekend is rounded out by Southside With You ($3M), Mechanic: Resurrection (expected to make $6-7M), Hands of Stone ($8.5M), and Hell or High Water ($8.5M).
Don’t Breathe is directed by Fede Alvarez, who directed the Evil Dead remake. The movie follows a delinquent teenage girl who, with her friend and boyfriend, breaks into the house of an old blind man. This man isn’t so defenseless, however, and soon the teens enter a deadly game of cat and mouse in order to escape the house with their lives. The horror flick has some real positive buzz behind it, with an 87% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Don’t Breathe stars Jane Levy, Dylan Minnette, Daniel Zovatto and Stephen Lang.
Suicide Squad may not be the king of August anymore, but that doesn’t mean you still can’t go see it again while it’s still in theaters. Alternatively, you could go see the so hot right now Don’t Breathe or maybe Hell or High Water, one of the most well-received movies of the year, if your lucky enough to have a theater playing it.
