The following story contains a spoiler for David Ayer’s Suicide Squad. Stop reading now if you don’t want to know it. I’ll even hide the story under a photo of Captain Boomerang.
The news has been getting out that The Flash, as played by Ezra Miller, appears in a brief scene in Suicide Squad. When you have a cool tease like that, it’s hard to keep it a secret for too long. Although, Jai Courtney was pretty damn surprised by the fact, because as it turns out, he didn’t film the actual scene with Ezra Miller, and didn’t know The Flash made it into the movie until he screened the final cut!
As part of a Suicide Squad press event in New York City, I was able to sit down with Jai Courtney, who plays Captain Boomerang in the film. Seriously, stop reading now if you don’t to be spoiled on Suicide Squad. There are scenes in the movie explaining how the villains end up in Belle Reve prison, and Boomerang’s involves getting caught by The Flash. Only, Courtney told me:
It was news to me! When I saw the movie, that was the first I knew of it.
Get out of here! You didn’t do the scene with Ezra?
Let’s explore that, please!
That was, whether is was something they knew or not, it was never mentioned [to me]. And so I am probably of the belief that was all by design in order to fucking, you know, just keep it [secret]. I don’t know how it got leaked, but I would have assumed they wouldn’t have dropped that gem until, you know, they would have just let people see the movie.
In a perfect world, That’s what would have happened. But eagle-eyed comic book fans now stuffy ever frame of trailer and commercial footage, and they caught this shot of Boomerang getting knocked back by something that carried a blue bolt of lightning.
That’s the same blue lightning that appears when Ezra Miller dodges Bruce Wayne’s batarang in the Justice League footage Zack Snyder brought to San Diego Comic-Con. Connect the dots, and it only made sense that The Flash would appear in Suicide Squad.
